Staying "un-divorced" is about shining the light of consciousness on just the right areas.

Many couples come to us in crisis, and learn that Couples Mediation can be a supportive process to help them get clear on their joint vision and conscious commitments. The resulting "relationship contract" often includes provisions for how partners talk to each other, how they make decisions, how they spend money, when and how they spend time together, and the like. If I'm doing my job right as couples mediator, the simple agreements I help people reach are like acupuncture needles, helping unblock the energy channels and allowing affinity and love to flourish. In Part 1 of this article, we discussed how intimate relationships might be thought of as a context for spiritual growth, and that “conscious” relationship is like spiritual practice because, as with any contemplative practice, it can result in transcendence of self along with self-actualization of the practitioner.

We then proceeded to take the first of four ritualistic practices and applied them in preparation for, or strengthening of, intimate relationships:

1. Clear the Path

2. Bow to the Light

3. Open Your Heart

We may come to see that the things we are most committed to often have us moving away from harmony.

Think about the last significant argument you had with your spouse. Try to recall the level of commitment you had to your position; how indignant you felt about something he or she was doing, saying, or believing; how wronged you felt. Psychologists who have studied the issue assert a regular gratitude practice has a number of significant, measurable benefits, including improved mental and physical health and quality of relationships. This year, as many people are feeling the weight of a divisive election season, and some find themselves worrying about...
