Why Separating Couples Should Always Start with an Intention Session

At Conscious Family, we believe most people truly want to show up in integrity, in every aspect of their lives. Our clients overwhelmingly have the best intentions to proceed mindfully when pursuing their divorce, but people facing transition can often be overwhelmed by big feelings and confusing logistics. That's why our standard process includes a guided activity called an Intention Session

This session is designed to help anchor separating spouses to their best selves and an amicable process. Even if they are in a place of challenge, with some additional tools people can feel empowered to take ownership of the process and negotiate divorce in full integrity.

The session begins with review and exploration of our Rules of Engagement. We’ve found that any mediation or negotiation setting is much smoother when people commit to certain ground rules for interacting with one another. These foundational tenets can help people get more efficient results and transition more gracefully through whatever emotions and content are present. Our hope is that clients continue to use these tools of communication well beyond divorce.

Next we take an opportunity to envision a post divorce future and imagine what life can be like beyond transition. If couples have children, setting a strong intention for how you want to go through this process can lay a foundation for a post-divorce relationship as a team. A cooperative co-parenting relationship serves as a protective factor for children long after the divorce is final.

Finally, participants make commitments around how they are going to carry themselves, throughout their divorce process and beyond. How they plan to show up for one another, their children or other loved ones, and, perhaps most importantly, themselves. At the end of the session, these commitments are shared and memorialized to create a path for divorcing consciously.

Divorce is consistently named one of the most challenging and stressful transitions in any person's life. At Conscious Family, we’re passionate about supporting families with tailored services such as the Intention Session, to help them transition in a way that minimizes the damage, honors the magnitude of this moment in life, and sets them up to thrive in their post-divorce life.
